This course focuses on developing underpinning knowledge of pharmacology and nursing skills required to ensure the safe practice in the administration of medication. Elements include:
- Extended scope of practice for Division 2 Nurses

- Indications and contraindications for drug usage
- Client assessment and evaluation of drug reactions
- Managing adverse reactions
- Methods of drug administration
- Safe handling and storage of drugs
- Legal and ethical issues related to medication administration
- Role of medications in health and illness
- Client education
On completion participants will be able to:
- Explain the role of medication in health and illness
- Explain the role of the Division 2 Nurse in the administration of medication
- Outline the legal and medical issues related to medication administration
- Explain principles of pharmaceuticals and drug actions
- Explain principles of pharmacokinetics
- Identify potential risk factors in different health patterns
- Assess clients prior to and following administration of prescribed medication
- Perform calculations accurately prior to the administration of medication
- Administer prescribed medication to clients
- Undertake client education related to management of prescribed medication
