Equal Employment Opportunity

The Equal Employment Opportunity Compliance Training course covers the following:

1. Terms and Concepts

Learn the basic terms and concepts such as discrimination and harassment to understand equal employment opportunity in the workplace. This topic sets the stage for learning about how the law defines unacceptable behaviour in the workplace.

2. EEO Costs and Benefits

Looks at the potential costs to organisations and workers - in damages awarded by tribunals, in legal costs, and in damage caused to relationships and to the organisation's business.

3. Laws and Systems for EEO

Explains the Federal, State and Territory laws that apply, what grounds of discrimination are identified by laws, and the complaints systems that give the laws their force.

4. Harassment

Briefly covers harassment - what it is, types of harassment (sexual, racial) and how tribunals would assess a harassment complaint by a worker.

5. Grievances and Complaints

Goes through the steps a worker can take to resolve the issue within the organisation, e.g. using grievance procedures. It also describes the process of taking a complaint to an EEO tribunal.

6. Building Productive Diversity

It is possible to confine a treatment of EEO to the letter of the law, but research has shown that this generally does not result in a change to workplace behaviour. This final topic introduces the idea of fostering a positive view of diversity in the workplace.
