Value Stream Mapping (VSM)

What is VSM and how will it help my workplace?

Value Stream Mapping analyses the complete value chain, from external suppliers, all on-site logistics and manufacturing/production areas through to delivery to end customer. CTS Value Stream Mapping is split into 2 distinct sections.

Section 1: Current State analysis.

Our Lean Engineers analyse the “Current State” of your operational, manufacturing/production and logistics process steps and determine which processes add value to your product or service.

By performing the Value Stream Analysis on the “Current State” of the business, our Lean Engineers will identify discrete areas where opportunities exist to reduce or eliminate waste. Our engineers are experts in identifying the 7 types of waste as identified in Lean Theory

The 7 wastes (WODMITS):

  • Waiting Time
  • Overproducing / Over processing
  • Defects
  • Motion
  • Inventory
  • Transport
  • Space

Other target areas:

  • Identifies areas for improvement which could help increase Value Chain efficiency
  • Identifies links between the information and material flow and how this is synchronised and fed into the production area
  • Determines process pace makers and Takt times
  • Identifies uptime and utilisation opportunities

Section 2: Value Stream Design

A Value Stream Design is developed based on information identified in the Current State Map. The Value Stream Design is developed to identify the most efficient “Future State” and the processes and techniques that need to be introduced to achieve reduced overheads for the business.

The Future State design identifies Lean methods and projects aimed at:

  • Reducing incoming and finished goods inventory levels
  • Internal WIP levels
  • Identifies areas requiring stock holding (buffers/supermarkets), determines trigger points
  • Identifies uptime and change Over targets

Choice Training Solutions, Value Stream Mapping is conducted by one of our lean engineers which will help you map an exact picture of your current state of operations. The VSM is conducted over 2 full days at your business premises and will require the involvement of senior, middle and shopfloor management to complete this activity.

Speak to Choice Training Solutions about how you can access some new Government grants to help pay for these services.

Value Stream Mapping is commonly used in conjunction with Choice Training Solutions Lean Manufacturing Training, Six Sigma Training and Kaizen Blitz (Continuous Improvement) programmes.
